To check the quality of milk being offered to Lord Mahakal at Ujjain’s world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar temple, a food department team under the instructions of the district collector, conducted a surprise inspection and took samples of milk sold at shops nearby on Saturday. The milk will be sent to a laboratory in Bhopal for testing and a report is expected in 15 days.

After the raids were carried out, it was revealed that the shopkeepers did not possess required licenses from the food department to sell the offerings and that the milk offered was adulterated.

The Supreme Court had previously given directions to only allow offerings of pure milk on the shivalinga to prevent its erosion.

Over hundred shops selling prayer materials and none have the license issued by the food department to sell such goods. The shopkeepers said that they get milk from dairy and then mix water to the milk and further sell it to buyers.

Devalia said, “The shopkeepers are selling adulterated milk to devotees which is absolutely wrong. The tests will determine whether any chemicals are also being added, except just water. Based on the test report, further action will be taken.”
