BJP national president Amit Shah threw a challenge at TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi to clear their stands on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue. Speaking at a rally organised by the BJP’s Yuva Morcha, Shah said that Mamata was opposing NRC because she was more concerned about her vote bank.

“We are not against Bengal. We are against Mamata. In 2005 she had spoken for the NRC at the parliament because at that time the Left Front was in power and she said the illegal immigrants were voting for them. Now in 2018 she is opposing NRC because at present they are voting for her. Rahul Gandhi is also opposing it. Mamata and the Congress president should clear what their priority is? National security or vote bank,” Shah lashed out at the rally.

He said that refugees would be given Indian citizenship according to the amendment of Citizenship Amendment Bill. “Members of Christian, Buddhist and Hindu community who had come from neighbouring countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh would be given citizenship and infiltrators would be driven out of India. It should be cleared before the next election whether they want to give these refugees citizenship or not,” Shah added.

Shah said that although BJP ruled in 19 states of India but the ‘vijay rath’ will not stop till TMC is uprooted and BJP’s rule is established in Bengal. To the people of Bengal, he said, “You have given the Congress, Left Front and TMC several chances but no one worked for your development. You must give one chance to Narendra Modi as well. You are prevented from celebrating Durga and Sarswati puja here. If BJP government is established here, pujas will be carried out without any fear or restriction. There should be a limit to the kind of appeasement Mamata does.” He also alleged that Mamata administration had ensured a cable TV blackout in order to prevent them from televising Shah’s programme.

Party MP and national president of BJP’s youth wing, Poonam Mahajan was also present at the rally. “Has there been any ‘parivartan’ (change) which Mamata had promised? The ‘parivartan’ has been only in terms of colour. There has been no ‘parivartan’ for the people. Mamata has taken such a U turn that I want to call her ‘U Turn Didi’. Her party has become a terror-making machine. Arvind Kejriwal wanted to make Delhi into London, he failed. Rahul Gandhi wanted to make Amethi into Singapore, he has failed but Mamata has successfully changed West Bengal into Bangladesh,” Mahajan said.
