With sheer grit and presence of mind, two bravehearts Constable Praful Kumar and Constable Dinesh Raja K of 45 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) made the country proud when they thwarted a major terrorist attack on their camp in Sumbal in the wee hours of Monday. Four terrorist were killed before they could make their way into the camp.

Constable Kumar of Delta Company of 45 Battalion was on sentry duty on picket number two at the main gate, while Constable Raja of Charlie Company was standing guard in watch tower number one when four terrorist tried to cut past the barbed wire to storm into the camp at 3.30 am.

Showing presence of mind, Constable Kumar's suspicions arose when a few stray dogs started barking incessantly near the camp.

"I used my search light to investigate. I was switching on and off the light to gauge the reaction. Whenever I would switch off the light, the dogs would bark loudly. This made me curious. When I switched on the search light again, I saw a terrorist with a gun crouching near the fence. I instantly fired at him, and continued my firing, while I pressed the alarm to alert others in the camp," said Constable Kumar.

Hailing from Munger district of Bihar, the 25-year-old constable Kumar has been posted in the valley since 2012. This was for the first time he saw action with terrorists in his five-year stint in the valley.

"This is my first posting since I joined CRPF in 2011. I have seen stone-pelting, but this was first time I was part of an encounter that killed four terrorists," said Constable Kumar.

Constable Raja of Tamil Nadu was in the watch tower when he saw Constable Kumar frantically using search lights and heard the dogs barking. He used his searchlight to check what had happened. "We were scanning the area when I saw two terrorists trying to enter the camp. We both fired for 15 minutes in order to engage the terrorists before the QRT and other guards arrived," he said

Two of the terrorists were killed by the two bravehearts in this initial encounter, while the remaining two were killed in a combined effort when QRT arrived.

Posted in the Valley from 2016, Constable Raja, along with Constable Praful Kumar remain unmindful of their bravery, both saying that they were just doing their duty.
