A day after TMC legislator Satyajit Biswas was shot dead at point blank range at a Saraswati puja in Nadia district's Phulpur, two Bharatiya Janata Party workers were arrested on the charge of murder on Sunday.

The two suspects, Kartik Mondal and Sujit Mondal, were Trinamool Congress workers before they defected to the BJP.

An FIR has been filed at Hanskhali police station which names, among other people, BJP executive committee member and Bengal in-charge Mukul Roy.

The police department has also suspended Biswas's bodyguard Prabhas Mondal, and Anindya Basu, the officer in charge of Hanskhali police station, which has jurisdiction over the scene of crime.

"They have been suspended for negligence of duty. There could be others who are involved in the murder and we are investigating the case," said Inspector General (south Bengal) Neeraj Kumar Singh.

The state government has ordered a probe into the murder by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The police are looking for one more suspect, BJP wroker Abhijit Punduri, who is absconding since the crime.

Unable to find him, the cops have detained his mother. On Saturday, agitated Trinamool Congress workers had attacked Punduri's residence.

The police said it seemed the shooters knew the locality very well, "otherwise it would not have been possible for them to shoot at the MLA in such a crowded place and escape unnoticed".

Roy contested the allegations, saying "naming somebody in a paper" didn't prove anything.

"I can also allege that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is behind the abduction of a BJP worker in Purulia. Fact is, there is no democracy in Bengal. There should be an independent investigation into the case to bring out the truth. Chandrababu Naidu is a good friend of Mamata's. Why can't he send his state investigating agency for a probe?" Roy said to media personnel.

BJP leaders alleged that Biswas was shot as a result of the in-fighting within the TMC, which was blaming the BJP to cover up the crime.

Jagannath Sarkar, president of BJP Nadia south district said, "The actual reason is the gang-clash within the TMC which they are trying to suppress by creating a smokescreen of our involvement in the murder."

Senior TMC leaders in turn came accused the BJP of "political murder". "They have hit rock bottom as far as political violence is concerned. People of Bengal are watching and they will give a fitting reply," said TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee.
