BJP leader Mukul Roy threw a challenge at TMC daring them to loot polling booths in the panchayat election next year.

“Will you be able to loot votes during the panchayat election? We will see about it at the ground level,” Roy said speaking outside the office of the state chief electoral officer (CEO).

He had been to the CEO office demanding free and fair polls and to ensure that all voters can reach the polling booths to cast their votes. Referring to the upcoming bye-election at Sabang Assembly constitution in West Midnapore district, he said that they are keeping a tab on state CEO Aariz Aftab. “You will have to stick to the election norms. There are 306 booths at Sabang. Each and every booth needs to be manned and managed by Central force. There should not be any bike rally 48 hours prior to the polls and there should be area domination to instil confidence among voters of the area,” he said. Roy alleged that the state CEO has been deviating from the spirit of the constitutional post owing to his allegiance to the ruling party. “We have your bio-data. We know how many posts of the state government you have held but that should not deter you. If you are unable, then you must remember this is not the last election which you would be conducting,” he said.

Mukul Roy said that BJP would get good result in Sabang and later in all the elections leading up to assembly elections in 2021. “Bhunia had been the alliance candidate of Congress and CPI(M) and he had fought against the TMC. Now he has defected to the TMC and his wife is the TMC candidate. As a result, workers of both Congress and TMC are heartbroken. They will not vote for him. After the elections of 2019 and 2021, BJP will come to power in Bengal,” Roy said.

In another development, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh, on the sidelines of a meeting at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas said that the way people were defecting from TMC to BJP, before the panchayat polls, TMC organisation would be broken. Speaking about arrest of TMC leaders, he said, “CBI is investigating chit fund cases under the supervision of the court and those who need to be arrested would be arrested. BJP has nothing to do with it.”
