A tribal woman at Attappady here, one of the largest tribal settlements of Kerala, gave birth to a stillborn girl child.

Health department sources said the baby died due to malnutrition and related health issues on Wednesday.

However, the condition of the mother, Sumathi, hailing from Chavadiyur settlement, is stated to be stable.

The expected date of the delivery of the woman was July 5, they said.

The blood pressure of the woman shot up suddenly yesterday and she was rushed to the district government hospital here, sources said.

Though doctors saved the life of the mother, the baby was declared dead.

The birth weight of the stillborn infant was 2.1 kg, health department sources added.

With this, the total number of infant deaths reported in the tribal settlement in this year has touched nine.
