India needs to bring into place a law on two-child policy for all religions, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said on Wednesday, in comments that could trigger fresh controversy. The Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises made the remarks at a cultural event comprising of sadhus and RSS workers at West Champaran in Bihar.
According to a report in The Indian Express, Giriraj said that if such a law was not enforced, "like Pakistan, we too will have to keep our daughters under the veil".
The report quotes the BJP MP from Nawada as saying, “Hindu ka do beta ho aur Musalmaan ko bhi do hi beta hona chahiye. Hamaari aabadi ghat rahi hai. Bihar mein saat zila aisa hai jahan hamaari jansankhya ghat rahi hai. Jansankhya hai. Jansankhya niyantran ke niyam ko ko badalna hoga, tabhi hamaari betiyaan surakshit rahengi. Nahi toh hamein bhi Pakistan ki tarah pni betiyon ko parde mein band karna hoga." (Hindus should have two sons, Muslims, too, should have two sons. Our population is on a decline. There are seven districts in Bihar, where our population has come down. Norms of population control need to be revised to protect our daughters. Otherwise, like Pakistan, we too will have to keep our daughter under veil.)
"A population control law should be made which allows only 1-2 children. The voting rights should be revoked of those who don't follow this," Singh told ANI.

In the event which also saw the presence of local BJP MP Satish Dubey and RSS leader Nagendraji, Giriraj also appealed to sadhus and saints to "save religion".
Giriraj Singh had earlier courted controversy when he called for critics of Narendra Modi to be sent to Pakistan in the run-up to the Lok Sabha general elections 2014.
