The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested three people on Tuesday for allegedly trying to secure seats for their candidates in medical colleges through fraudulent means in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) held on May 6. The agency has registered a case following a complaint by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The director of CBSE, Sanyam Bhardwaj, in a complaint letter has alleged that a few touts helped students in qualifying the NEET exam in various government and private colleges across India.

The CBI conducted searches at six locations across the country. CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said, "Searches were conducted on the residential and official premises of the accused, leading to the recovery of incriminating documents including original educational certificates, admit cards of NEET exam, blank cheques, rubber stamps of educational institutions and others things." Around 13 lakh students had taken the test conducted at 2,255 centres in 136 cities across the country on Sunday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohit Kumar of Khurja district in Uttar Pradesh, Manoj Kumar Sikka of Ludhiana in Punjab, and Ashwani Tomar of Akruti Education of West Patel Nagar in New Delhi. The arrested accused were produced in court and remanded to police custody for three days. The CBI has also booked yet unknown parents and candidates.

It has been learnt that Mohit Kumar, is a tout and helps prospective candidates appearing in the NEET-UG Examination. Mohit is also in connivance with Sikka, who runs a consultancy agency in Ludhiana for NEET-UG admission.

According to the FIR, the accused Mukesh and Manoj are also hand-in-glove with Arti and Ashwini Tomar, who run a private agency -- Akruti Education, a Delhi-based private agency involved in providing consultancy to the prospective candidates appearing in NEET-UG Examination. Mukesh and Manoj also run a consultancy agency in Ludhiana, Punjab for NEET-UG admission.

"All four were using unfair means and were in a conspiracy with some unknown candidates/parents and other private persons are planning/trying/attempting to qualify their known candidates using illegal, unfair and unscrupulous means, thereby depriving others, reads the complaint letter," the FIR stated. "By doing so, both, the CBSE and genuine candidates at large would be cheated. Further, these acts would lead to sabotage of the examination system and loss of reputation to the CBSE."
