What a win!
Updated : Dec 10, 2018, 12:55 PM IST
Ask any 90s kids. One of the defining memories is Rahul Dravid's square cut through the offside to score the winning runs in Adelaide. Yes, it was in 2003, but most people were still smarting from the bitter losses and disappointments of the 90s. Cut to 2018. Indians so used to narrow losses overseas in the last year were again bracing for a similar outcome till KL Rahul managed to get the all important catch of R Ashwin's bowling.
That literally opened the floodgates with people reminiscing and hailing the historic nature of the win. This is the first time that India has won the first match of a test series in Australia and only their sixth test win in Australia overall. It also made Kohli the first Asian captain to have won a test in South Africa, Australia and England in the same calendar year.
Sachin Tendulkar who has been tweeting aggressively throughout the match said that it reminded him of the historic Adelaide match where India defeated the all-powerful Aussie outfits. Others too, fans and crickleters alike weighed in on the significance of the win through many expressed frustration with Ashwin's bowling on the fifth day.
What a way to start the series!#TeamIndia never released the pressure. Superb batting by @cheteshwar1 with crucial knocks in both innings, @ajinkyarahane88 in the 2nd innings and excellent contributions by our 4 bowlers. This has brought back memories of 2003. #INDvAUS pic.twitter.com/4gmviaKeCC

Amazing grit displayed by the Australian lower order, but this is a moment to savour for a long time for Team India. The bowlers gave it everything and let’s just enjoy this and carry the momentum into the Perth Test #AusvInd

2003 at Adelaide:

Indian No.3 scored his 16th Test century in 1st innings. Scored fifty in second innings & India won.
2018 at Adelaide:
Indian No.3 scored his 16th Test century in 1st innings. Scores fifty in second innings & India won.
India lost the first Test in England by 31 runs & went on to lose the series 1-4. ......tells the importance of starting right.

Now that they have won the first Test v Aus (also by 31 runs!), they should not squander this opportunity.#AUSvIND #AUSvsIND
This win will be remembered for Pujara rightly because but for his knocks this would have been a defeat but the heroes as much are the bowlers who bowled relentlessly with not a lot of help from the pitch. That was a question mark of this attack and they have truly answered it

Well done Cheteshwar, the quiet soldier. Adelaide 2018 will always be remembered as your special test match.

People will focus on Australia's fightback, but buggered if I'll let you focus on that.

India just beat Australia in Australia.
That is a massive achievement for a team with Rohit Sharma in it.#AUSvIND
Congratulations #TeamIndia for a historic win at Adelaide. Tough match but the boys held on. Great fight shown today by Australia. pic.twitter.com/g7g2a7oDSO

While in sport it is winner takes all and it is India who lead 1-0 i am concerned with Ash not closing it out yet again. If Southampton was an aberration Adelaide makes it a pattern and that is a real cause of worry.

Fifteen years ago, I was here with Rahul Dravid after his epic innings. Such joy to be here now with @cheteshwar1, a true successor. pic.twitter.com/udv0n0XmjA

One of the most heartening things about this Test is India won without needing anything heroic from Kohli

We lived to see India win Tests in South Africa, England and Australia in the same year.

Only kids who grew up in the 90s (when we had one away Test win in 10 years, in Sri Lanka), will know how special this is.
One indicator of a champion bowling side is when wickets get shared almost equally amongst it’s bowlers. This is increasingly happening with India.#AusvsIndia
