A good Samaritan auto driver was rewarded with free education for his children two months after he returned a bag of Rs 80,000 in cash to a school trustee.

According to a Times of India report, two months ago, Amit Gupta, the auto driver ferried 68-year-old Sarla Namboodiri from Arunodaya English School in Chembur to her car that was parked a little away. Naboodiri, a trustee at the school said that due to her age, she was unable to walk the distance and had to use an auto rickshaw every day.

On that day, Namboodiri forgot to take her bag out of the auto that contained Rs 80,000 in cash, credit and debit cards, driving licence, house keys, two cell phones, car registration documents, and PAN and Aadhaar cards. The money, Namboodiri told the Indian daily, was collected as student fees.

Namboodiri began to panic, as the school was going to shut for Christmas vacations the following day. However, soon after, the rickshaw driver returned to the school and gave her the bag, saying that another passenger found it in the backseat.

Before she could react, Gupta had left and Namboodiri had no way of tracing him down, until a few days ago. He was called to the school and felicitated. “I found out that he wasn’t doing well financially. I learnt that he had two kids but couldn’t afford to send them to school. Being a former teacher and with my experience in the education sector, I decided to provide his children free education,” said Namboodiri while speaking to Times of India.

Gupta was felicitated and awarded Rs 10,000. “Had Gupta not brought my bag back, I would have had to face a lot of trouble,” she said
