The changing of the rules of the 457 visa will not pose as a threat to skilled workers in India, as Indians continue to fill the missing positions in Australia's IT-sector, said Australian envoy Harinder Sidhu. "The facts of the situation should be taken into account, rather than an instinctive reaction to the situation," she told reporters at the Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC) in the Capital on Tuesday.

Sidhu said that Indian who qualify for work in Australia do not have much to fear, because job opportunities will not dry up. "Every country is keen to engage with its domestic workforce before hiring someone from outside their own country. Indian visa-holders, especially in the IT-sector, are in demand in Australia as they are in short supply there. We expect Indian to continue to come to Australia," said Sidhu.

The envoy also replied to questions on racial abuse. "We respond swiftly to any concern of racial abuse. And we Australian institutions and police work together, encouraging everyone to raise concerns about safety issues," said Sidhu.

Sidhu further said that the number of student visa in Australia has seen a steady rise over the years. "In 2015, we issued 46,000 student visas, in 2015 there were 53,000 student visa, and in 2017, there were 61,000 visas issued," she said, adding that in 2016, over 2,80,000 Indian arrived in Australia.

Sidhu also said that China's increasing role in the region not hamper Indo-Australian ties in any way. "China is a country with an enormous economic weight, and Australia will pursue any form of bilateral ties with China responsibly, and within the requisite international norms. We will take into account all strategic stakes," she said.
