Lal Bazaar, headquarters of the once most feared police force in the country, has now come under the scanner of the Kolkata High Court. This comes in the light a Public Interest Litigation which raises serious concerns over the potbellied police personnel, unfit for the maintenance of law and order in the city.

Overweight policemen, waddling clumsily with sticks, pulling their trousers up to prevent them sliding below their bulging belly is a common sight in this city, often ravaged by hooligans and political disturbances. The pitiable sight of a bespectacled police inspector sobbing bitterly before the camera when the police station was ransacked by miscreants is still fresh in the minds of people across the city. The most classic case of police personnel in an important police station using office files as shield from rampaging crowd only served to highlight the concerns among the public about the physical ability of the force smarting under their own weight.

Yet in another case, some senior police officers who were chosen for police medals had to struggle hard with their protruded bellies while receiving honours from the Chief Minister during the Republic Day Parade in the city.

Lal Bazaar has no immediate response to this spectacle of decrepit police force. They blame it on the sedentary lifestyle of the policemen who past their middle age are given off-field duty. They are allowed to grow out of their size and are never trained to be athletic. Some point fingers at Bengalee aversion for physical activities.

The Kolkata police may take a lesson from the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ms Vasundhara Raje Scindia who has instructed the state's police personnel to practice yoga to shed extra fat.

Everyone is now awaiting a direction from the division bench of the Kolkata High Court, which is expected to come soon.
