A nine-year-old girl died, and three of her schoolmates sustained injuries after a speeding tempo rammed into them at Malad on Tuesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Muskaan Memon, and one of the three injured, who are siblings, is in critical condition. Meanwhile, CCTV footage of the accident has gone viral.

According to Malwani police, the incident took place around 8 am, when Memon and her friends, all residents of Malwani, were walking at Marve Road near Jari Mari temple.

The police suspect that the driver lost control over the vehicle, rammed into a parked auto rickshaw and then went on to hit the children. Passers-by immediately rushed to help and tried to grab the tempo driver who, however, managed to flee.

"While Memon died on the spot, we rushed Neha (13), Bhupendra (9) and Kamal Menali (12) to Shatabdi Hospital. While Kamal has been discharged and Bhupendra is out of danger, Neha is still in a critical state. They were later shifted to KEM Hospital," said Deepak Phatangare, senior police inspector, Malwani Police Station. A case has been registered against the driver.

"The tempo has been sent to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for expert inspection to ascertain whether there were any glitches with the vehicle. The owner of the tempo was contacted, who gave us details about the driver, and efforts are on to nab him," Phatangare said.

A relative of Muskaan said, "She was a very bright student and was studying in a municipal school."

"She was the only daughter of her parents."

The police maintain that the children had bunked school, however one of the kids said they had decided to go for a stroll before classes began. "We left home around 7:30 am," says Kamal, "but since there was still time left for school to start, we thought of taking a stroll. Suddenly a vehicle came from behind and hit us."

Auto driver Ram Kushwaha, whose vehicle was damaged in the accident, had a lucky escape as he was not near the autorickshaw. "I saw a speeding tempo crash into my auto and then drag it, before knocking down the four children," Kushwaha said.
