Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs on Monday announced that they will launch a dharna on June 28, in support of MP CM Ramesh's indefinite hunger strike. In its sixth day now, Ramesh has been on an indefinite hunger strike at the zila parishad office in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, to demand that the Centre set up a steel plant there.

Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu also held a teleconference with the party's MPs, MLAs and other party leaders over Ramesh's strike. TDP leaders announced soon after that they will hold protests across the state in the next three days in his support.

"We have written several letters to the Centre, raised the issue in the parliament, met the Prime Minister and Union Ministers, and made representations about setting up an integrated steel plant in Kadapa. Yet, the BJP leaders at the Centre are adamant. The Centre is spending Rs 1 lakh crore on the bullet train, it has even borrowed money at less interest and is spending it on the project. Why is the Centre stepping back from setting up the Kadapa steel plant?" said Naidu.

Naidu said that despite MECON submitting a report stating the plant is feasible, the Centre filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court against it.

"We have agreed to give everything, including reserving mineral resources, connectivity, power, water and other incentives that the task force had asked for in a span of six meetings," he added.

Naidu said that the Centre was politicising the matter as the negligence could benefit his political rivals, Gali Janardhan Reddy and YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. "Both YSR Congress and Jana Sena have colluded with the BJP and they won't say a word against the Centre or PM Narendra Modi," said Naidu.
