With Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav behind the bars, the onus of preparing the party for the general election is largely on the shoulders of his younger son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who is touring the length and breadth of the state as a part of his "Samvidhan Bachao Nyaya Yatra".

Tejashwi's yatra is an attempt not just to connect with voters but also to mobilise party workers who are dispirited ever since Lalu returned behind the bars serving sentence in various fodder scam related cases in December last year.

"The election is less than six months away, and as there is no hope of Laluji coming out of jail anytime soon, Tejashwi has taken it upon himself to motivate the party cadre before the poll bugle is sounded," said a senior RJD leader in Patna. He added, "This is also an opportunity to check the preparations at the ground level. He can check where the party is lacking and what more needs to done to bring in more voters."

He said, "You can gauge his political acumen by the swift move he showed when he did not spare a moment to call on Upendra Kushwaha on Friday when both were at the same circuit house and the 50-50 seat formula of the NDA was announced."

Tejashwi, also the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, is using the yatra as a platform to attack "his chacha" Nitish Kumar as well as the BJP "for usurping the people's mandate given to the Mahagathbandhan."

"He does not forget to remind the public that Nitish broke his promise and joined forces with the people who are trying to change the Constitution of the country," the leader said.

At many of his recent public meets, Tejashwi has raked up the issue of reservation, and claimed that BJP and company were hatching a plot to do away with the quota system. In 2015, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's comments on reservation was believed to be one of the main reason's behind the BJP's fall in Bihar.

"They have put my father in the jail because they know they cannot tamper with reservation till he is outside. However, I am his son and I will not let it happen either," says Tejashwi, at almost all his public meets, where majority of his supporters include Yadavs and other backward class people.
