Top and second wrung leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam are on the run from the hands of law.
The Tamil Nadu police have registered cases against hundreds of party workers including close associates of Union Fertilizers Minister MK Alagiri and former agriculture minister Veerapandi Arumugam for land grabbing.
With the change of government in Fort Saint George, more and more people have started coming out in the open complaining about land grabbing by the DMK leaders when the party was in power.
The Jayalalithaa government set up a special cell to deal with cases related to land grabbing and the response was quite amazing. Many DMK bigwigs including Azhagiri’s close aide Thalapathi of Madurai face arrest.
Till Thursday, more than hundred DMK workers have been arrested and 1500 cases has been filed across the state according to a top police official.
“The last five years was a reign of Goonda Raj in Tamil Nadu,” R Nataraj, former additional director general of police, told DNA. “Prime plots of land under the legal possession of common man were taken over by the DMK leaders and their henchmen either through force or threats. The complainants are told in advance about the consequences of filing false cases. Cases are registered only after a thorough preliminary investigation to ensure that the complaint is genuine.”
Early this week, the DMK chief M Karunanidhi issued a statement condemning the filing of cases and arrest of his party workers.
“The AIADMK government has unleashed a reign of terror and vendetta against our party workers,” charged Karunanidhi and MK Stalin in separate statements.
After two days Karunanidhi told his party workers to approach either the DMK legal cell or the court without waiting for the Jayalalithaa government to foist cases against them.
“We have been told by the leadership to seek anticipatory bails to preempt the move to arrest us,” said a DMK functionary.
Every day brings out more cases of land grabbing and the main suspects are DMK workers. In addition to cases of land grabbing, many local body chiefs have been held on charges of cheating banks. Tuesday saw the arrest of Mohammed Ibrahim, the DMK chairman of Kodaikanal Municipal Council for usurping land belonging to a church.
“The land in this hill resort is valued at Rs 30 crore and Ibrahim got it for a song because of his contacts in Chennai,” said a local DMK worker.
On Wednesday, the police arrested Krishnamoorthy, the DMK chairman of Ranipet Municipal Council, for a massive fraud committed with a public sector bank.
Wednesday also saw the police slapping charges against the party’s former MLA K P Ramasamy for usurping seven acres of prime land in Rasipuram using his clout in the party. Even youth wing leaders of the DMK are facing the music for crimes like making forged documents to grab land.
“During Amma’s regime rowdyism has no place in Tamil Nadu unlike the DMK rule. Anti-social elements had a field day during the last five years,” said Rama Ramanathan, a AIADMK leader from Kumbhakonam.
