Tamil Nadu: One arrested for manhandling Christian pastors in Kanyakumari Temple

After a video of two Christian pastors being manhandled at a temple in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district gone viral, the police on Saturday arrested a person in connection with the incident that happened on April 22.

After a video of two Christian pastors being manhandled at a temple in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district gone viral, the police on Saturday arrested a person in connection with the incident that happened on April 22.

The video shows that pastors being forcefully smeared with holy ash by some miscreants inside the Mutharamman temple at Sandhaivalai. Both pastors were made to sit on the temple corridor with holy ash applied on their faces even as one of them was heard chanting “Bharat Mata ki jai” in the background.  The pastors were allegedly attacked for distributing pamphlets criticising the centre.

Dr N Shreenath, superintended of police, Kanyakumari told DNA that a case has been registered at Arulvaimozhi police station in the connection and one accused has been arrested.

Police have arrested Suresh and booked him under section 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and section 342 of IPC (punishment for wrongful confinement).

When asked about his political affiliation, the police said that he did not affiliated to any political or religious groups. Police said that the accused would be remanded after producing before the magistrate.

The attack on Christian pastors has happened at the communally sensitive Kanyakumari district. Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency is represented by the BJP’s union minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan.

 Tamil Maiyam Organisation condemned the incident and staged a protest in Chennai. Jegath Gaspar Raj, founder of Tamil Maiyam Organisation blamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliated organisations for the attack on the pastors. He said that they will resist forces of violence by the strength of the non-violence. "Atrocities against the Christian community, the assault and attack on Christian preachers and threatening of the Christian population in Tamil Nadu are being done by the RSS and its affiliated organisations. We will repel the forces of violence with the strength of non-violence," said Raj.
