Many people across the city were elated on January 6 when they received an SMS stating that their account had been credited with the flood relief money. The Tamil Nadu government had declared compensation for everyone in the city. Many people lost their homes and everything in it when the Chennai floods hit the city post the torrential rains. Many others lost cars and bikes as they vehicles got stuck in the flood waters.

The TN government compensation scheme declared that Rs 10,000 each will be paid to those who lived in huts. Families with permanent homes would get Rs 5,000 each. The government sent officials to collect bank details from every home in the city so that the money could be directly credited into the bank account. Thousands of people received their compensation on Wednesday.

The government will continue to disburse the amount till January 11.
