No Navrartri in Tamil Nadu is complete without 'Golu' and artisans are busy this time of year making a large variety of them. This year artisans from Vilacheri in Tamil Nadu have decided to be completely eco-friendly.
A report in The Hindu states that the artisans’ from Vilacheri have shunned the usual ‘Plaster of Paris’ and are using only mud or papier mache for their dolls. Though Plaster of Paris is cheaper than the other two options, the artisans have stated that they are aware of the dangers of using it. Dolls are also made out of chalk.
The popular doll sets are the ‘Dasavatharam,’ ‘Ashtalakshmi’ and ‘Sorgavasal’ this year.
