Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Wednesday announced that one lakh concrete houses would be built in place of the huts damaged in the cyclone Gaja affected districts.

Talking to reporters at Vedaranyam after visiting the Cyclone hit Nagapattinam district, he said the people of the district have been severely affected by the calamity. A total of 2,85,467 people, belonging to 77,319 families are currently housed in 415 relief camps, where they are being provided food, drinking water, and clothes.

Two weeks after cyclone Gaja hit Nagapattinam, the CM along with Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam visited the district and distributed relief material to the victims. He also distributed relief material to 607 beneficiaries, amounting to Rs 74 lakh. He will also visit cyclone-hit villages in Tiruvarur.

After being criticised by opposition parties for opting for an aerial survey during his last visit, Palaniswami took a train ride to Nagapattinam this time and made several pit stops to meet the affected people and interact with them.

The Chief Minister said that the government would provide long-term solutions to the victims so that their means of livelihood are restored soon. He also promised all possible assistance from the government.

Along its path, Gaja uprooted thousands of trees, damaged homes, and boats in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai districts. Many areas are still without electricity as close to a lakh electric poles were damaged.
