Tamil Nadu: 18-year-old killed while trying to take selfie near railway track

An 18-year-old boy was run over by a goods train and another seriously injured when they were trying to take a 'selfie' near a railway track on the city outskirts on Wednesday, police said.

An 18-year-old boy was run over by a goods train and another seriously injured when they were trying to take a 'selfie' near a railway track on the city outskirts on Wednesday, police said.

The boys, both studying at a private college, noticed the train approaching and attempted to click pictures using a mobile phone. However, they were knocked down, they said.

Passers-by rushed the injured students to hospital but one of them succumbed to his injuries there, police added.

Another incident in December last year, a 20-year-old youth lost his life while taking selfies near a river in Badlapur. The deceased was identified as Shahid Shaikh, a resident of Mankhurd. According to Badlapur police, a group of six to seven Chembur-based youth had gone to Badlapur to celebrate their Christmas vacation when Shaikh attempting to take selfies drowned in the river. His body was fished by local swimmers who joined the rescue operations.

The police said the youngsters were on a three-day holiday. Shaikh slipped and fell into the water while clicking selfies. Shaikh's friends looked for him but failed. Some of the villagers rushed to help but they too could not locate him.
