Cautioning against the reduction of fair and remunerative price (FRP) for sugarcane, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) leader and Lok Sabha MP Raju Shetty has criticised Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for joining hands with Nationalist Congress Party while organising a two-day conference on sugar industry issues.

Speaking to dna, Shetty has cautioned the state government that the politically aware sugarcane grower will punish the regime if FRP is reduced.

He said that at a two-day conference at Vasantdada Sugar Institute at Manjri, Pune, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis shared the dais with union minister Nitin Gadkari and NCP president Sharad Pawar, even though the CM had earlier criticised Pawar for causing the sugar industry's rot with corruption.

He also said the same BJP leaders, who had joined hands with SSS before the election for farmers' issues, are now joining hands with Pawar for preparing a 10-year roadmap for the industry. He, however, pointed out that Gadkari has expressed the need for reducing FRP.

Shetty said the conference had invited cooperative sugar factory leaders, mainly from NCP, who are involved in rampant corruption in this sector. The BJP came to power by exploiting the fact that NCP leaders have ruined the cooperative sugar sector with massive corruption but while organising the conference, BJP has forgotten SSS as well as other farmers' unions, he said.

BJP enjoyed joining hands with SSS since it wanted to gain power and now it is going with NCP leaders, and for this, it would pay a heavy price in the coming days.

Shetty asked how the government could prepare a roadmap for any industry or sector without involving all stakeholders.

He pointed out that sugarcane farmers, along with mill owners and harvesters or labourers who cut cane from the field, are important players in the sector. Since the government has ignored them all, SSS has decided to organise an alternative one-day conference at Sangli on May 3.
