It’s been 11 days since the body of a minor girl – who was tortured and raped – was found dumped in the bushes in a Surat locality, but the police have not been able to identify her, let alone nab the culprits, Mumbai Mirror reported.

The Surat incident has added to the nationwide outrage in the wake of the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, as well as the rape of a woman when she was a minor in Unnao.

While the Surat Police have announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for information on the girl or her family, a local developer, Tushar Ghelani, said he’ll pay Rs 5 lakh to anyone providing information regarding the victim.

The police recovered the severely injured body of the girl near from a cricket ground in Bhestan area of Surat on April 6. After five-hour long postmortem, it was revealed that the girl was raped and tortured for at least eight days. She was strangled to death.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Surat police commissioner Satish Sharma said, “The Surat police have been trying to solve the case, but couldn’t find any clue. We seek the people’s support to solve the case. Anyone who comes forward with any information related to the case will be given Rs 20,000.”

Claiming that his team has not left any stone unturned, Sharma said, “We printed 1,200 handouts and posters, which were distributed and put up at different locations across the city and on trains. Prima facie it seems the girl, who has not been identified yet, may have been a resident of West Bengal or Odisha.”

Ganesh Govekar, Forensic Head, Civil Hospital, said, ‘The girl’s body had 86 injury marks including ones on her private parts. Samples have been taken for forensic test to ascertain whether she was drugged or not.’

Police inspector BK Jhala said, ‘Even after eight days, the parents of the girl are yet to be identified. The police also believe that she was murdered somewhere else and the dead body has been thrown here. The victim’s picture has been sent to the state police control room for identification process.’

He said Police have registered a case of rape and also booked the unidentified accused under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. A reward of Rs 20,000 has been announced for anyone providing information about the girl or her family.
