The Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped the Rajasthan Government over its inactivity and lethargic behaviour to curb illegal mining in certain areas of Aravalli range. The Apex Court has given forty-eight hours to the State Government to clear out the illegal mining and has further asked the Chief Secretary to file an affidavit over the same by Friday. Interestingly, the Supreme Court has taken stock of a report submitted by the Central Empowered Committee nearly a year back.

In its report, the Central Empowered Committee that has been assisting the Supreme Court has said that 115 hectares of land lying in the Aravalli hills are under illegal mining. Further, it has been said in the report that a total of thirty-one hillocks have completely vanished due to the illegal mining.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard the matter again and asked the Rajasthan Government about the actions taken to stop illegal mining. The State government, in its reply, has informed the Apex Court that it is in the process of issuing show cause notices to those behind illegal mining. Further, the State Government has also informed the Court of its resolve to end illegal mining in the state and also informed that the process is ongoing in this regard.

However, the Court was dissatisfied with the Government's reply and observed that the report of the Central Empowered Committee was submitted a year back and that the State Government was acting slow, which the Supreme Court observed, can not be tolerated. The Court further observed that already 31 hillocks have been lost to illegal mining which is one factor of increasing pollution in Delhi as there are no natural barriers.

The Court then asked the State Government to clear out the illegal mining areas within 48 hours while the Chief Secretary has been asked to file a compliance report on Friday. The next hearing over the matter is scheduled for Monday.
