A final-year engineering student of the University of Mumbai has fallen prey to the inefficiency and lax approach of university officials.

Sarita (name changed), a student of IT Engineering at the Yadavrao Tasgaonkar College of Engineering & Management, Karjat, has been asked to appear for a paper that she had passed as per the university's online results due to its own technical error.

Back in 2015, Sarita had failed to clear the Engineering Mechanics paper in the second semester and had reappeared for the exam in May that year. As she checked her result online, she was happy to see that it showed 'passed in the previous exam'.

However, days after the results were declared, Sarita did not get any marksheet from the university and thus started doing the rounds of the exam department on the university's Kalina campus. "I had applied for a change in the spelling of my name as there was an error and was told that the delay in getting the marksheet was due to that change. In the next few months, I kept waiting for the marksheet but got no response either from the college or from the university officials," she said.

Sarita moved on to give her next exam thinking that the university would issue her marksheet some day or the other. However, her college insisted on having a document showing that she had cleared the previous semesters before she could appear for her semester 8 final exam which started on May 12. "When I went to the university again in April, I was shocked as the officials there told me that I have not passed the exam. They said that my seat number was alloted to another student by mistake and his result was reflected as mine in the online system. They asked me to appear for the exam again and said that they cannot issue any marksheet as I had failed the exam," said Sarita.

Sarita said that it was impossible to re-appear for the exam then as there were only 15 days left for it and that she had not studied the subject for over two years now. After several requests, her college allowed her to appear for the exam provisionally but Sarita's fate still hangs in balance. "I have been asked to suffer for a mistake that I have not committed. The university should hold its officials accountable. Why should I give the exam again?" she said.

Deepak Wasave, Controller of Examinations at the university said that Sarita had failed in her semester two paper and would have to re-appear for the same. " Due to a technical error, two students were alloted the same seat number but her marks in the official gazette show that she has failed. The college should not have allowed her to sit for the next exams until she cleared the previous one. We will put her case in front of the board of studies to decide what can be done in the case," he added.
