The school education department has decided to make the rules for first year junior college (FYJC) more stringent starting this year. The department has not only brought about several changes in the application forms for first year junior college admissions but have also asked schools to ensure that they help students in filling these forms in the school itself.

This year, students would be given a chance to pick only 1 to 10 options for colleges that they want to seek admission to instead of marking 35 options as per the old system. Unlike the previous system, students cannot secure a provisional admission. “We have decided to make the admission rules more stringent to avoid chaos of any kind. Now students would have to carefully pick their choices as they can fill anywhere between 1 to 10 choices.

However, if a student is allotted a college that he/she has marked as their first preference, the student would have to take that and would be out of the admission process,” said an official from the education department.

Admissions for FYJC would begin from the first week of June this year. While the department has asked schools to fill the first part of the form, students can then fill the options of their choice in part 2 after the results are out. “We have conducted workshops with all the school principals to ensure that they are trained about the new guidelines. We are also going to hold sessions for junior college principals soon,” said the official.

The department has also asked schools to ensure that all the students apply for junior college admissions through the online process and the schools do not give them leaving certificates unless they do so. “We have strictly asked schools to ensure that all their students apply through the online system,” said the official.
