After four months of closure, the 434 km long Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway has been re-opened for vehicular traffic.

The re-opening of the National Highway 1D was done by way of a ceremony on Wednesday by Lieutenant General Subrata Saha, GOC, Chinar Corps.

During this winter, the strategic highway was kept open for a month beyond the normal period (upto 12 January, 2015). “This year, despite the heavy snowfall during February-March 2015 caused due to the westerly disturbance, the snow clearance operations commenced on 18 March 2015,” said Lt. Gen. Saha.

The snow clearance work got over during the first week of May or earlier this month. In the last one week, trials were undertaken using light and heavy vehicles to ascertain that the road is fit and safe for vehicular traffic.

Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway is not only crucial for strategic purposes, but also important to boost the tourism sector in the Ladakh region. Tourists travel to Leh by road from Srinagar, making it important to open the national highway.

Various measures to improve the connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh Region with widening of the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road and tunnelling at Gagangir or Z Morh (6.5 Km tunnel) and Zoji La (14.10 Km tunnel) is also underway so that the Ladakh region does not get cut off during the winter months.
