These kids may be special but their infectious enthusiasm at the Second Annual Special Sports Meet held to mark World Disability Day showed that they were dependent on no one. At least, not on the playing field.

Students from local schools like Upasna, Green Ribbon, Udaan, Stimulus, Billabong International participated in the event which was held at Kothari International School Sec 50 Noida.

Children in the age group of 3 years to 16 years made their parents proud as they participated in different races and games. The parents were equally involved in all the activities as they beamed and cheered on their kids.

Talking to DNA, Meena Vardhan, mother of Akash Vardhan who was one of the participants said, “I worked as an organiser, volunteer and host in these types of events and I really support them in each event.”

“Parental support is the most important thing for a child and i support my kid in every other way. It is really good that schools are merging with this foundation,” said Vikas Sharma, father of another of the special participants.

The event involved activities like a one legged race for the age group of 8-11 years, shotput for 5-7 years, basketball for 12-16 years, hit the target (throw ball) for 3-5 years and 6-8 years and many more sports.

Volunteers said that such events, if held regularly, would help boost the confidence of the participants. “It is the second sports meet and it is beautiful experience to see all these children participating,” said a volunteer.

Sharing her experience about the meet, Dr Sonali Kataria Co-founder of Sunrise Learning Foundation said, “This second sports meet is different from the first one as it involved more participants and volunteers this time. We help the children to feel the joy of participation, competing and wining.”

Winners were awarded special prizes, certificates and medals were awarded as a gesture to boost their confidence and learning skills.
