Spat between Eman's sister and Saifee Hospital gets even bigger

The hospital says that Eman is medically stable. "Her weight loss has been miraculous, which is the reason why the time required for her to be in the hospital has reduced," said Huzaifa Shahabi, the COO of Saifee Hospital.

A day after a video featuring Shaimaa Selim — Eman's sister who had accompanied her from Egypt to India for the latter's surgery — went viral, the controversy surrounding Eman's operation has taken an ugly turn.

Saifee Hospital, where Eman's operation took place, has claimed that her condition has improved and has asked for her to be discharged in the next two weeks. But an emotional Shaimaa, who had made accusations against bariatric surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala in the viral video, questioned on Tuesday: "How can I take my sister back to Egypt in a plane? What if something happens to her during the journey?"

The hospital says that Eman is medically stable. "Her weight loss has been miraculous, which is the reason why the time required for her to be in the hospital has reduced," said Huzaifa Shahabi, the COO of Saifee Hospital.

But Shaimaa vehemently disagrees with the claim. "Eman is in pain and frequently unconscious. She does not talk anymore and her brain activity, too, seems to have slowed down. How can she return?" she asked. The hospital, meanwhile, told Shaimaa that since Eman now weighs close to 171 kg and can sit, they are ready to send her back to Alexandria, Egypt.

Eman's treatment has reportedly cost the hospital close to Rs 2 crore, while the online fundraiser started for her managed to raise Rs 21 lakh before it was stopped.

Shaimaa made other serious allegations as well. "I was told that if I ever speak to the media, then they (the hospital) will discharge my sister in six hours," she claimed. She added that she also had offers from hospitals in Dubai who wanted to treat Eman, but chose Saifee because Lakdawala convinced her that Eman would receive the best treatment there.

Meanwhile, Dr Aparna Govil Bhasker, the section chief of bariatric surgery at Saifee Hospital, "resigned" from the team of doctors treating Eman, saying that it was her way of protesting against Shaimaa's behaviour.
