BSF rifleman Mandeep Singh of the Sikh regiment and constable Koli Nitin Subhash lived and died for the country. Exactly one month after surgical strikes, the brave sons of India have made a supreme sacrifice on the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil, Kupwara, North Kashmir.

Constable Koli Nitin Subhash of Sangli, Maharashtra is the second soldier to have died on the LoC in a span of 12 hours. Mandeep Singh was earlier killed and his body badly mutilated by Pakistan backed militants on Friday evening.

Son of a truck driver, 26-year-old Mandeep Singh from Kurukshetra, Haryana had joined the army in 2009. Comrades in his unit remember him as a patriot who always preferred country over self.

Nationalism runs in the blood of the family of the rifleman. Singh's maternal brother serves the same unit, which has been deployed to guard the LoC. Singh's wife Prerna is working with the Haryana police.

Patriotism filled the air as troops remembered the fallen hero on Saturday. "Sepoy Mandeep Singh lived by the teaching of the Holy Guru Granth Sahab and embraced martyrdom by it too," said an
army spokesman.

Constable Koli Nitin Subhash had joined the BSF in 2008 and was respected for his bravery by his colleagues in the unit. Posted in particular Forward Defence Location (FDL) on the Line of Control (LoC) at Machil since August, he came to prominence when he and his team foiled Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) strike and successfully killed a militant some months ago.

On Friday he was to retaliate to the ceasefire violations from Pakistan. While firing a long range weapon, one of the rounds blasted in the chamber causing him severe injury. He was given first aid but developed complications by late evening and succumbed. A BSF soldier and woman were also injured after the Pakistan army violated ceasefire along the Line of Control in Keran sector of Kupwara District. SP Kupwara Shamsheer Hussain said the situation is under control. Army late Saturday claimed that four Pak posts were destroyed in massive fire assault in Keran Sector. " Heavy casualties inflicted," tweeted army northern command.
