More than 200 officials of Uttar Pradesh Police found themselves in the midst of a search and rescue operation, after a 23-year-old woman was allegedly abducted in an auto when she was returning from work on Wednesday night.

The alleged incident came to fore when another girl, who is yet to be identified, came crying towards an auto stand in the same area and informed some auto drivers about the abduction. Police are yet to identify the second girl as well.

The alleged abduction took place at around 8.30pm when the woman, identified as Dipta Sarna, was returning from her office in Gurgaon. Dipti, an executive in the legal department at Snapdeal, was on her way to Kavi Nagar area of Ghaziabad after de-boarding at Vaishali metro station.

According to the police, Dipti's father Narender told investigators that he was waiting at a bus stop close to their residence in Kavi Nagar for his daughter at the time of the incident. Dipti was supposed to take an auto to the bus stop near Hindon bridge.

"The father told us that Ms Dipti called him from the auto and told her that she was about to reach. However, moments later the father heard her shouting at the auto driver. She was shouting at the driver as to why he had taken a wrong turn," said a senior police officer.

The officer added that investigators were trying to locate the girl ever since the matter came to fore but so far they are clueless about the accused.

"The second girl told the auto drivers that a young man who was driving the rickshaw pointed a knife at the two and told her to run away. The accused then fled taking Dipti with him. When the girl informed the other auto drivers in the locality, they rushed towards the spot but couldn't find Dipti. They called the police and we took some of the drivers to locate the other girl who was supposedly with Dipti but she too had disappeared by then," the officer added.

While speaking to dna, Prachi, Dipti's cousin, said that the family was in shock and was hoping that their daughter returns safely. "We cannot believe something like this happened to our family," Prachi said.
