Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani was in Bengaluru on Sunday to chair a meeting and one of the important items on the agenda was yoga.

According to a report in The New Indian Express, Smriti Irani was in the city to attend an international yoga conference organised by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandana Samsthana (S-VYASA) University.

Now, a proposal has been put forward to make yoga compulsory from pre-school to post-graduation across India. A source in the HRD Ministry has told the daily that a discussion took place on the exact curriculum and even training for yoga teachers across all classes. Minister of State for Ayush Shripad Yesso Naik, and University Grants Commission Chairman Ved Prakash also took part in this meeting.

The Vice-Chancellor, S-VYASA University, Dr Ramachandra G Bhat, has stated that they submitted a proposal to the UGC about the importance of yoga in education. They even said that they would train the yoga teachers. The HRD and Ayush departments will ensure that there is basic and advanced education in yoga with Ayush looking after the course at the primary level. Teachers will also be trained through the National Council for Teachers’ Education according to Bhat.

Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandana Samsthana University is said to be one of the best places for yoga studies in the country. It has also suggested that they develop a yoga curriculum like the ones formulated for science subjects.

Other items discussed with Smriti Irani during the meeting on yoga include making yoga separate from physical education and allowing for research studies as well.
