The huge roundabout at Vijaynagar Square looks interesting but it has been major traffic bottleneck. Even though the administration is shifting a bus stop near the square, it seems to touch a only a part of the problem.

Locals, traders and daily commuters say that in the evening movements of vehicles coming from all directions add to traffic chaos. The common feeling among the people of the area is that the size of roundabout is the origin of the traffic congestion.

Indore-Bhopal taxi service supervisor Mohan Singh Pawar says he witnesses chaotic evening hours daily at the square. According to him, reduction of the size of the roundabout would definitely offer more space for vehicle movement. Saifuddin from scheme no 54 market said that the access to scheme no 78 and other areas remains problematic from Vijaynagar square due to traffic pressure and business is getting affected.

A fellow shop keeper Ramesh Jain said that BRTS was planned haphazardly and service lanes remain unused. He says these lanes could be opened for two wheelers, at least opposite Mangal City Mall. He even suggested a flyover from Meghdoot Garden road towards Radisson road for hassle-free movement of vehicle.

Restaurant owner from Mangal City Mall, Manish Vachher also affirmed that de-congestion at Vijaynagar Square is the need the hour as evening traffic chaos leads to below par business during peak evening hours. Manager Apna Sweets Babu Sharma complained that customers face tough time while reaching the restaurant in evening.

ASP (traffic) Anjana Tiwari agreed that the big size roundabout affected smooth flow of traffic at Vijaynagar square. She said that the traffic police had moved a proposal in October for altering its size.

A committee comprising IMC city engineer Hans Kumar Jain, traffic expert Jagat Narayan Joshi and traffic officials has been formed to decide whether to reduce the roundabout or remove it completely, she said.

And, how much the IMC is interested in tackling the city’s problems can be gauged from the response of Hans Kumar Jain. When dna contacted the IMC city engineer to ask about the inspection of the rotary, he casually replied that “what’s there in inspection, we daily pass from the area.”

“I can’t hold the meeting alone,” Jain answered when asked about the proposed meeting of the committee to decide the future course of action. He also claimed that the rotary was fine in accordance with the engineering aspects.  As an afterthought he said the meeting might take place in a week or so.
