Amid controversy over former President Pranab Mukherjee visiting the RSS headquarters for an event, senior Congress leader and ex-Union Minister P Chidambaram made a special request to the veteran politician.

Instead of opposing Mukherjee’s Nagpur visit in June, Chidambaram said that, ‘now that he has accepted invitation there is no point debating why he accepted it.’

‘More important thing to say is, sir you have accepted invitation, please go there and tell them what is wrong with their ideology,’ the former Finance Minister was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Earlier in the day, Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala wrote a letter to the former president, urging him to refrain from attending the June 7 event.

‘I am extremely sorry to say that your decision to attend the function organized by a communal outfit has sent a rude shock to the secular minds of this country,’ Chennithala wrote.

‘Being the tallest leaders of the great Indian National Congress which has been responsible for preserving the secular fabric of this country, your decision has invited unparalleled disgruntlement among the ranks and file of the Congress party,’ he added.

Chennithala is not the first Congress leader who has written such a letter to Mukherjee. On Tuesday, Senior Congress leader CK Jaffer Sharief also wrote a letter to former President wherein he requested him to "reconsider and avoid visiting" the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh event.

Meanwhile, the RSS has hailed the former President’s greatness for accepting their invitation to address their workers in Nagpur.

"This isn't surprising for those who know and understand the Sangh, because RSS has always invited prominent people of the society in its programmes. This time, we invited Dr Pranab Mukherjee and it's his greatness that he has accepted our invitation," read a statement from the RSS.

The former President will address the Third Year Sangha Shiksha Varga (SSV), which is held at the RSS headquarters annually in Nagpur.
