After stirring controversy over the issue of statehood for Vidarbha, and resigning over the issue of a separate Marathwada state, former advocate general Shrihari Aney is being projected as the Kejriwal of Vidarbha by many working for the cause.

Speaking to dna over phone on Thursday, Aney said, "Yes, I would be addressing a rally at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on March 31. But I am not a leader in the classic sense of the word. I am a conscience-keeper of the movement. I think a leader has to emerge." When dna pointed out that he had already emerged as a leader for Vidarbha statehood agitations, Aney replied, "If it is happening naturally, let it happen. But let me tell you, I am not the only leader for Vidarbha movement."

A lawyer par excellence, Aney has been cautious about his arguments in the past and has never expressed any political ambitions. But under public pressure and due to friends' insistence, Aney is likely to be leading the launch of agitation to create a separate Vidarbha. And just like Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal, Aney friends are planning to organise a programme at Jantar Mantar. There, Aney would put his stand across at the national level for the first time. He would then return to Nagpur on Saturday and address the Nagpur press at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan.

After the press conference, Aney's well-wishers have also organised a meeting of representatives from Vidarbha Connect and Vidarbha Rajya Aghadi (VIRAA) at Dharampeth office in Ngapur on Saturday evening. He will also travel to Wardha to address a public meeting on March 28. On April 3, he will address a public meeting at Jijamata stadium in Buldhana.
After his resignation, Aney had made it clear that he would continue to raise the voice for the issue of a separate Vidarbha state.

Associate AG Rohit Deo has been handed over the officiating charge of Maharashtra advocate general by the Governor on Wednesday evening. The move came after advocate general Shrihari Aney resigned on Tuesday, after a row over his reported remarks on a separate Marathwada state.
