Our security forces achieved a rare feat this Sunday when a local Lashkar-e-Toeba terrorist laid down his arms to surrender in a live encounter in Barbug village of South Kashmir's Shopian district. Two terrorists were killed in the gun-battle that lasted more than 12 hours.

Adil Hussain Dar of Chitripora village was among the three LeT terrorists who were holed-up in the village after security forces launched a cordon and search operation on Saturday evening.

When a joint team of J&K police and 44 Rashtriya Rifles were closing in on the intended target, the terrorists opened fire on the search party. In the initial gun fight, one terrorist was killed, while the other two remained holed up.

Adhering to the standard operation procedure, the security forces gave the terrorists a chance to surrender. Announcements were made through loud speakers to convince them to lay down their arms.

Sensing unease in one of the holed up duo, the security forces decided to wait and watch. Finally, Dar came out in the open to surrender. He was whisked away immediately to an undisclosed destination where he is being interrogated.

"He (Adil Dar) was trapped in the encounter. He was given an option to surrender which he accepted," Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, Superintendent of Police, Shopian, told DNA.

A 'C' category terrorist, Dar had joined terror ranks on May 12 this year. "We appeal to all local terrorists to shun the path of violence and return to their families," said Lieutenant General JS Sandhu, General Officer Commanding, 15 Corps.

After Dar's surrendered, security forces launched a final offensive and killed the last holed up terrorist. "One of the militants was killed last evening and another one died in the morning," said Shriram.

The two slain terrorists were identified as Altaf Ahmad Rather of Awneera-Zainapora and Tariq Ahmad Bhat of Barbugh. Bhat had joined terror ranks in October 2016, and Rather had been active since May 23, this year.

"Both the slain terrorists were involved in the attack on SPO Khurshid Ahmad Ganaie. Tariq Ahmad was involved in an attack on a security force convoy at Chakoora, Shopian. He was also involved in the attack on Sub Inspector Gowhar Ahmad Malla," said a police spokesman.
