The Delhi government has handed over compensation cheque of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the three sanitation workers who had died while cleaning a sewer pipe in Lajpat Nagar, an official said today.

Earlier this month, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced the compensation after meeting the family members of the victims -- Joginder (32), Annu (28) and Mohan (25).

"On the chief minister's direction, the compensation cheques have been given to the families," said a senior government official.

The chief minister had also announced job to a member of the families of the deceased.

Kejriwal had said that a high-level committee would be constituted to prevent such incidents in the city.

The three workers died allegedly after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning the sewerline in Lajpat Nagar on July 16.
