Sessions Court sentences Andheri man to three years in prison for stealing electricity

The accused was a resident of a slum rehabilitation scheme towers raised in the Sakinaka area of Andheri.

On Tuesday, the Sessions court convicted a 28-year-old man arrested in 2012 from Andheri for stealing electricity.

Prakash Gaikwad was given the  maximum sentence of three years with a Rs 1,000 fine.

The accused, according to the prosecution,  was a resident of a slum rehabilitation scheme towers raised in the Sakinaka area of Andheri, where he was living with his family,
 
However,  the flat which he lived in was an encroached one and the High court had directed the Andheri police to vacate similar flats and seal them.
 
Senior police inspector Shridhar Hanchate with the Saki naka police had visited the towers, and entered Gaikwad’s house and asked him and his family to vacate the house. 

It was during the inspection, that it was discovered Gaikwad had stolen electricity from one of the flats which was sealed by police, following the Bombay High court’s orders. The accused had trespassed the flat sealed by the court and committed the theft.
 
Additional public prosecutor Sanjana Sharma had examined five witnesses in the case and all had supported the evidence.
