With number of Jat protestors swelling in Rohtak as they gear up to organise a major demonstration in the state to mark Balidan Diwas, Haryana government has beefed up security on the National Highway and adjoining districts.

Jats who are leading a renewed protest to demand reservation for the community since January 29 have announced to observe February 19 as Balidan Diwas in memory of youths killed during the agitation last year. The protestors have announced to hold a rally starting from Mundka Metro station in Delhi.

"We have ensured maximum deployment of forces along the highway and other districts wherever there is sit-in protest. As many as 37 companies of the paramilitary forces have also been deployed," ADGP (Law and Order) Muhammad Akil said while talking to DNA.

Dismissing rumours being circulated on social media that people have been urged not to travel via the National Highway leading to Delhi, Akil said no traffic advisory had been issued for the public. "The situation is normal and security arrangements have been made. People need not panic. Strict action will be taken against those found indulging in spreading rumours or misinformation on the social media," said Akil.

Apart from reservation in government jobs and educational institutions, the protestors are also pressing for cancellation of criminal cases registered against a number of Jat youths following last year's protests, release of those lodged in jail and government jobs for kin of those who were killed and injured while taking part in the agitation.

As the protest entered its 21st day, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also announced to release compensation to innocent persons who sustained injuries during the Jat reservation agitation last year.

Any person who sustained a bullet injury will be paid Rs 1 lakh and those who suffered a fracture not due to any bullet injury will be paid Rs 50,000. The amount of compensation will be Rs 25,000 for those who sustained any other minor injuries. This will be paid out of CM Relief fund, and the DC's were directed to immediately release the payment.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Ram Niwas said the government is taking all steps to ensure that common people do not face any inconvenience due to the protest and next round of talks will be held with Jat leaders after Feb 20.

While Yashpal Malik, who is leading the Jat agitation under All-India Jat Aarakshan Sangarsh Samiti (AIJASS) has announced that peaceful sit-in protests and a rally will be held, the police is taking no chances keeping into consideration the aftermath of last year's agitation. "Haryana Police, Central forces and other agencies are coordinating with each other to ensure peace and law and order was maintained," said ADGP Muhhamad Akil.
