Former Bharatiya Janata Party President Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said at a rally here that his party would look into the needs of the farmers, tackle inflation and rid the country of corruption if voted into power in the 2014 General Elections.

“The present predicament of the nation is that wheat is cheap but bread and biscuits are expensive; oranges are cheap, but juice is expensive; tomatoes are cheap, but sauce (ketchup) is expensive; potatoes are cheap, but potato chips are expensive. I would like to ask, who does this government work for?” Gadkari asked.

“This is not a government that works for the farmers. This is not a government that works for the poor and the hardworking farmers. This is a government that works to loot the people of this country. …The Congress are those artists that stuck their head inside the earth to indulge in corruption in the Coal scam,” he added.

Continuing his onslaught on the corruption allegations levelled against the ruling party, Gadkari said: “The Congress Party should change its name to Scam Party. …Change is needed to save this country, to rid corruption from this country and to remove inflation from this country. Change is needed in this country.

“If voted into power, we have resolved that the farmers’ condition would be addressed first. We will save our farmers,” he added.

Gadkari also said that the Congress has been promising poverty eradication in the country since the time of independence, under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, however it has failed and continues to make the same promises under party President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi in the lead up to the 2014 General Elections.

At the rally, Gadkari also remained confident of his party’s chances to come to power in 2014, and said: “The number of people who have come out here today shows that Haryana has resolved to vote the Manmohan Singh-led government and the Haryana state government, which indulged in illegal land acquisition from farmers out of power. This is what your numbers show…. The Bharatiya Janata Party flag will flutter on the Lal Qila.

Meanwhile, also speaking at the rally, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj remained optimistic about the BJP’s chances in 2014 and said: “To eliminate the loot of this government we need to hold strong in the Lower House.

BJP President Rajnath Singh was also present at the rally in Sonipat.
