Taking into cognizance the controversy regarding alleged leak of the data of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the Assam Assembly much ahead of its final publication date on August 31, the bench of CJÌ Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman has directed for system to be in place to prevent such occurrence.

SC said that the system shall be in line with that of securing Aadhaar data. Only hard copy of exclusion shall be displayed at NRC centers."Only hard copies of lists of inclusions and exclusions to be provided at district offices. NRC to be updated according to law laid down in section 66a Judgment", the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said.

Pending cases of citizenship before foreigner Tribunal from 1950 to 1987 will not affect the final decision on inclusion in NRC. The Court directed that the final list of NRC shall be published online family wise on August 31.

In an earlier hearing, Assam NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela had said that despite the Supreme Court directing complete secrecy of the NRC data, the same had been breached. Hajela requested the Court to ensure secrecy of the data and sought directions in this regard.
