Fadnavis had made the comments while accusing Uddhav Thackeray's party of "destroying" Mumbai.
Condemning Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his statement comparing Mumbai with Patna, Congress Mumbai unit president Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday demanded an apology from him for insulting North Indians.
Nirupam said that Congress would approach the election commission over the divisive statement. Addressing media persons at Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) office, Nirupam said, “The BJP had always used derogatory language against North Indians. He said it was the BJP leadership that had questioned the DNA of Biharis and had paid a heavy price in the Bihar elections.”
At a rally in Mumbai on Thursday, Fadnavis had accused Uddhav Thackeray's party of "destroying" the metropolis, and claimed that the development in Mumbai was in the same league as that of Patna ("Mumbai ka vikas dekho kitna hua..Patna ke sath lake khada kar diya").
Stating that all the issues of Mumbai, including bad roads, corruption and lack of amenities remained unresolved, Nirupam said that the BJP and the Shiv Sena were both responsible for the same. “While BJP is saying that Shiv Sena is a party of scamsters and the Shiv Sena is terming the BJP as a party of goons, both are going to come together after the elections. These people who are scamsters and party of goons are jointly ruling the country and the state,” Nirupam said.
Nirupam said that Shiv Sena was threatening to pull down the government only for garnering votes in Mumbai said that both the parties were cheating Mumbaikars. "Chief Minister, on one hand, goes for eating Baati-Chokha with North Indians and on the other hand, he insults North Indians by such statements,” Nirupam said, adding that Fadnavis should apologise to North Indians and withdraw his statement which is aimed at diverting attention.
