A fire incident allegedly due to a Samsung Note 2 onboard was reported in a Chennai-bound Indigo flight no 6E-054 at 7.45 AM on Friday.

After the flight took off, few passengers noticed the smoke smell coming from a hat-rack and alerted the cabin crew. On examination, the cabin crew identified smoke coming from a bag containing Samsung Note 2 kept in the hat-rack of seat 23C.

The Pilot-in-Command was informed and the crew managed to extinguish the fire and quickly transferred the Samsung Note 2 into a container filled with water in lavatory. Air Traffic Control was informed about the incident as well.

Responding to dna's query, Indigo spokesperson said:

IndiGo confirms that a few passengers travelling on 6E-054 flight from Singapore to Chennai noticed the smoke smell in the cabin this morning (September 23, 2016) and immediately alerted the cabin crew on board.  The crew quickly identified minor smoke coming from the hat-rack of seat 23 C and simultaneously informed the Pilot-in-Command.  Taking the precautionary measure, the cabin crew on priority relocated all passengers on other seats, and further observed smoke being emitted from a Samsung Note 2 which was placed in the baggage (of a passenger) in the overhead bin. There was NO fire observed but sparks were observed. The crew discharged the fire extinguisher which is as per the Standard Operating Procedures prescribed by the aircraft manufacturer, and quickly transferred the Samsung note 2 into a container filled with water in lavatory. The aircraft made a normal landing at Chennai airport, and all passengers were deplaned as per normal procedure. This equipment (Samsung mobile) will be further examined by the concerned departments. IndiGo has voluntarily informed the DGCA.

Speaking to Times of India, DGCA advised flyers to exercise caution while flying with Samsung Note devices.

Earlier this month DGCA prohibited the use of Samsung Galaxy Note7 mobile phones onboard aircrafts following a series of incidents of the smartphone's battery exploding. Director General for Civil Aviation BS Bhullar had said, "In the light of recent incidents involving battery issue with Samsung about its Galaxy Note 7 devices globally, travelling public and airlines are advised to ensure not to turn on or charge Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone on board the aircraft."
