Salem Lok Sabha constituency: Lok Sabha election in Salem will be held in the second phase of General election on April 18. Polling in all 39 parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu will be held in the second phase. In 2019, the key contest here is going to be among AIADMK's KR Saravanan and DMK's SR Parthiban.
 
The two major parties in Tamil Nadu — DMK and AIADMK — has entered into an alliance with a number of parties for the forthcoming elections. 

The DMK has aligned with Congress, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK, VCK, IUML, KMDK and IJK while the AIADMK is contesting the election in alliance with BJP, PMK, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Puthia Tamizagam, Puthia Needhi Katchi and NR Congress.

Since both AIADMK and DMK have aligned with a number of parties for the upcoming elections, the two parties will directly contest against each other in only 8 seats. 

In Salem, 3,482,056 is the total population according to 2011 census while 73% is the average literacy rate.
 
Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 parliamentary constituencies where 7 of them including Sriperumbudur, Chidambaram, Rasipuram, Pollachi, Perambalur, Tenkasi, and Nagapattinam have been reserved for candidates representing scheduled caste community. However, no seat here has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

Salem Lok Sabha election results in 2014 and 2009
 
2014: PR Sundaram (M) of the AIADMK secured 563272 votes and defeated S Gandhiselvan (M) of the DMK who secured 268898 votes. 
 
2009: S Gandhiselvan (M) of the DMK secured 371476 votes. He defeated V Tamilarasi (M) of the ADMK who got 269045 votes.

Two central parties — Modi's BJP and Rahul Gandhi's Congress — in order to make further in-grounds in the state are contesting the forthcoming elections in alliance with two major parties of the state. The BJP has entered into a tie-up with the AIADMK and will be contesting on 5 seats while Congress will contest polls in alliance with the DMK on 8 seats.
