The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) uniform and the matter of "anti-national" activities on university campuses across the country remained the core issues of discussion on Day 1 of the three-day Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, which began in Rajasthan's Nagaur on Friday.

In fact, the JNU row found a prominent mention in the annual report presented in the meeting. "We expect the Central and state governments to deal strictly with such anti-national and anti-social forces and ensure the sanctity and cultural atmosphere by not allowing our educational institutions to become centres of political activities," read the annual report.

"JNU cannot be ignored. Discussions did take place. You will get to know the details in a few days," said a senior Sangh functionary.

Besides that, education, eradication of caste-based discrimination and creation of an atmosphere of social harmony are among the key issues to be discussed over the next couple of days. Also, BJP's ideological mentors will also be finalise the new ganavesh or uniform for its members.

The Sangh is likely to reach a consensus on the matter of new uniform. While shorts will continue for regular shakha members, professionals associated with the organisation will get track pants and t-shirts.

The idea to replace the balloon khaki shorts was first mooted in 2005. The issue was then put to test and was taking rounds in Sangh's various forums. The Sangh had also conducted a nationwide survey in 2009. "When this idea was first discussed, we had decided that the matter will be taken up after 10 years. The discussion has now begun," Vaidya had said on an earlier occasion.

The uniform is being changed keeping in mind the youths joining the shakhas. Unlike India, the international shakhas of Sangh have track suits and t-shirts as uniform for their members. "The design and the colour of the shorts will undergo some changes, but they will stay. The track suits will be introduced in the weekly and monthly shakhas, which are attended by professionals," said a Sangh functionary.

The change in the uniform will take place in a phased manner. The transition will be complete by 2025, when the Sangh celebrates its centennial year. To make its Tarun Shakha or youth wing more attractive to the youngsters, its name was changed from Tarun to IT Shakha a year ago.

This is not, however, the first time, that the Sangh is introducing a change in its uniform. It has undergone changes from time to time. At the time of its conception in 1925 till 1939, it was an all-khaki uniform. Khaki shirts were replaced with white ones in 1940. The design of the shoes was changed in 1973 and the leather belt was replaced by fabric only a couple of years ago.

More than 1,400 Sangh workers, including Vidya Bharti, Vijanan Bharti, Kreeda Bharti, Samskrita Bharti, Swadeshi Janaran Manch and Vishwa Vibhag, are participating in the meet.
