With less than 24 hours to go for the result of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the illegal betting market indicates that Shiv Sena will emerge as a single largest party with at least 95 to 100 seats in the 227-seat BMC. At least Rs 3,000 crore has been put on stake for this election
About 55% voters on Tuesday exercised their franchise in the Mumbai civic body BMC polls. BJP and its bickering ally in the state government, Shiv Sena, who could not form an alliance for the civic poll in the megapolis or elsewhere this time, fought keenly, lashing out freely at each other during the bitter campaign.
The stakes are high for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, who led their respective parties from the front and were involved in a no-holds-barred campaign, relegating the opposition Congress, NCP and other players like MNS and AIMIM to the background.
The illegal betting market has bet Rs 3,000 crore on the results of the country's richest civic body with an annual budget of over Rs 37,000 crore.
According to Zee24Taas, bookies have predicted that Shiv Sena will win at least 95 to 100 seats, while BJP will bag 50 to 70 seats. Bookies have bet 25 paise to the rupee on Sena and 34 paise to the rupee on the BJP.
The Congress and NCP, it is predicted, will win at least 25 and 12 seats respectively. The bet on Congress is Rs 2.25 to the rupee and Rs 1.10 to the rupee on the NCP.
Interestingly, the Raj Thjackeray-led MNS has not figured anywhere in the betting list.
Retaining the 227-member BMC is vital for Shiv Sena as the city has been its political heartland since its formation in 1966.
The BJP flagged "transparency" in civic administration as the central slogan while the Sena campaigned on its performance in BMC over the last two decades.
