A major controversy erupted after a premier nursing college asked the girl students not to wear 'abhaya' (long cloak worn by Muslim women to cover their body) and cover faces during clinical postings.
Ancillary Medical Training (AMT) School of Government Medical College Srinagar, has asked the students to furnish an affidavit to maintain a dress code and not wear abhaya and cover their faces during clinical postings.
Hundreds of students are studying in the AMT School which is the premier nursing college of the valley. This is for the first time that the directives have been issued by the administration.
Principal of Government Medical College, Srinagar, Dr Samiya Rashid said there is a proper dress code in every profession and there is no controversy about it.
"I do not know why you people are creating controversy about it. If she (principal AMT) has issued proper instruction that there should be a proper dress code so that people differentiate between doctor, nurse and common person. I don't think there should be anything controversial about it. It is unfortunate that we are trying to malign each other," said Dr Rashid.
What has however created flutter is that the reasons given for banning the veils is that it could be a source of infections for the patients in the hospitals. Officials said proper dress code is a necessity for ensuring hygiene and proper health care in the hospitals
Under fire from students and other groups the authorities are now mulling to review that clause to avoid any controversy. "We are canceling it," said Dr Razia Mahmood, principal AMT.
