A week after the alleged gruesome murder of a 36-year-old Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker, Himmat Patidar, in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh, causing the BJP to target the Congress-led government, police believe he is alive and suspect him to have murdered him employee, Madan Malviya.

A body with multiple wounds and a face burnt beyond recognition was found last week. Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and many BJP leaders targeted the state government and Chief Minister Kamal Nath for the killing. However, according to police, DNA tests revealed the body to be that of Malviya, who was dressed up in Patidar's clothes.

According to the police, deep in debt, Patidar faked his own death in the hopes that it could be paid off with his life insurance of Rs 20 lakh. After the police's claims, MP Home Minister Bala Bachchan took a swipe at the BJP, saying, "Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should visit the house of the Dalit man who has been allegedly killed by Patidar, one of their (BJP's) own men, and console his family members. Why he (Chouhan) has not tweeted yet?"

On January 23, it was Patidar's father, who informed the police about his son's 'death'. A police team, along with forensic experts and sniffer dogs, arrived at his home in Kamed village. Five teams were set up for a thorough inquiry.

Police found Patidar's ID cards, Aadhar card, ATM card and a diary with details of his bank accounts, loans and insurances. His shoes and a blood-stained belt were found near the body. His bike was also parked nearby. While investigating, police found that Malviya, who worked on Patidar's farm, had been missing since January 22, the day before the murder. When police started looking for Malviya, they found mud-splattered clothes and shoes around 500 metres from the crime scene. These were identified by Malviya's family as his. That was when police started suspecting foul play and realised that the muddy shoe prints on Patidar's bike's foot-rest matched with Malviya's shoes.

Patidar's call records revealed that his mobile was used until around 4:30 am on the day of the murder but everything on the phone had been deleted. Subsequently, police learnt that Patidar would always go to his field at night to turn on the water pump. But that night, the pump wasn't turned on. It also stood out that the diary found near the body conveniently had details that would benefit his family. A post-mortem report revealed that the victim was strangled and hacked with a sharp instrument. His face was burnt so he couldn't be identified.

Police had a breakthrough after a DNA test confirmed that the body was Malviya's. More inquiries revealed that Patidar had bought a life insurance worth Rs 20 lakh on December 17, 2018. Police also found out about his debt of Rs 10 lakh, which led him to come up with the elaborate plan.
