University of Rajasthan, on Monday, released a clarification stating that students currently studying in Five-Year Law College will get valid degrees, once they graduate.
This clarification came as a response to the protest at the university campus, which ended late Monday evening.
A fifth year student, last Wednesday, went on an indefinite hunger strike, until the demands including affiliation with Bar Council of India (BCI) were met. The affiliation by BCI to run the course was only till 2014-15.
Six students including four girls and two boys joined the hunger strike on Saturday, after the condition of students who were already on strike deteriorated and were taken to the hospital by the local police.
The clarification stated that BCI has allowed admissions for the year 2018-19 only after certain criteria are fulfilled.
“The university had timely applied for the renewal of affiliation with the BCI, which even completed the inspection for the three colleges on January 06, 2017, as was informed by Dr SPS Shekhawat, dean, faculty of law,” the clarification stated.
Students were earlier not satisfied with the steps taken towards fulfilling of the criteria released by BCI, that is, hiring permanent faculty for the three law colleges of the university.
They even submitted a memorandum to Suman Sharma, chairperson, Rajasthan Women’s Commission, seeking help for the same. Sharma, in turn, has given an assurance of appropriate action.
“I will personally speak with Kiran Maheshwari, minister of higher education, regarding the issue and proper action will be taken soon,” Sharma said in a statement.
In addition to this, parents of several law students visited the university on Sunday and Monday to seek redressal regarding the issue.
