Seven persons including a child were killed and 21 others injured in a major accident when a Roadways bus crashed into a concrete mixer truck early on Sunday morning at Tabiji bridge near Ajmer. According to the police, the accident occurred when the truck and bus collided head on as the truck was being driven on the wrong side of the road. As the news of the accident spread, senior officials rushed to the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Arun Kumar, Tarachand, Dileep, Naira and Zeeshan while two others are yet to be identified, the police said.

Around 6.30 am, a bus started from Pali depot of RSRTC for Bharatpur wherein a handful of passengers were traveling but by the time it reached Beawar, it was full with passengers, cops said.

“Work for the freight corridor is going on near Adarsh Nagar in Ajmer for which the mixing plant and other required works are being undertaken near Tabiji. It has come to light that early in the morning a mixer truck, instead of taking the proper route, took to the wrong side of the highway to avoid traveling the five kilometers long rout. It took a U-turn to reach the right side of the highway and was heading for the mixing plant,” officials said.

While the truck was being driven on the wrong side near the Tabiji bridge, the bus was passing that spot. “It is suspected that the bus was being driven behind a vehicle and the driver tried to overtaken the vehicle a few times but failed. However, he then tried to overtake the vehicle in front from the left lane and as the bus driver veered towards the wrong side to overtake, he must have seen the truck coming from wrong side. He then tried to steer back into the middle lane but failed to avert the collision and both the truck and bus crashed head on. The left side of both the vehicles was destroyed as a result,” the police officials said.

The passengers seated on the left side of the bus sustained severe injuries. “When the locals heard the loud sound of the collision, they rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. The police was also informed and senior police and administrative officials and ambulances were rushed to the spot. One after the other over a dozen people were rushed to the hospital where seven persons were declared dead while six others are undergoing treatment,” officials said. Later politicians, administrative and police officials met the family members and the injured passengers.
